Understanding how dental insurance works
Contrary to what many people believe, dental insurance is meant to be used regularly, not exclusively when something goes wrong, as is common with medical insurance. You are actually encouraged by your dental insurance provider to use your benefits to ensure you undergo preventive care. As you’ll learn, it’s why preventive dental treatments like exams, cleanings, and X-rays are largely covered by your plan. With that said, you’ll want to confirm the treatments your plan offers.
What does my dental insurance cover?
Most dental plans tend to follow the same coverage breakdown. However, you should always contact your insurance provider to confirm this is the case. Oftentimes, dental insurance coverage looks like the following:
- Preventive care – at or close to 100% coverage – largely used on exams, cleanings, X-rays, and sometimes fluoride therapy for children. Please note-preventative care comes out of the yearly maximum.
- Minor restorative care – normally between 70% and 80% coverage – mainly covers dental fillings and sometimes root canal therapy.
- Major restorative care – up to 50% coverage – used for crowns, bridges, and dentures.
