A root canal treatment is necessary to avoid losing a tooth. If you are suffering from a toothache, the first step is an exam, X-rays, and may require a course of antibiotics. Once the infection is under control, your root canal procedure can begin. The procedure involves these steps:
- The tooth is opened so the infected inner pulp of the tooth can be gently and thoroughly removed with specialized dental tools.
- Once the damaged natural material is removed, the inner tooth root is filled with a rubber-like material to seal the area and protect it from further harm.
- A temporary filling may then be placed, or a same-day crown created, with our in-office CEREC system. Rather than needing another appointment to complete the process, you have the option of a same-day crown. The crown covers the tooth, creating a tight, impermeable seal, keeping the tooth sturdy, firmly in place, and functional.

Is a root canal painful?
When under the care of the professionals at Complete Dentistry, you will not experience pain or discomfort during your treatment – we care about our patients, and ensure they are completely comfortable, from start to finish.
Will I need more than one appointment?
Every patient is different. Some patients do not need a crown, and may require only a filling, while others need a crown to complete the process. We offer same-day CEREC crowns, as well as custom lab-created crowns, which require a second appointment. A temporary crown is placed while a custom lab-manufactured crown is made and placed, typically about two weeks later.
Why is a root canal better than an extraction?
If a tooth can be saved, it should be. When a tooth is extracted, the other teeth can shift, causing further dental problems, and loss of jawline bone density. If the tooth was visible, an extraction leads to obvious aesthetic issues. If the tooth is too damaged to repair with a root canal procedure, we also offer dental implants and other solutions to keep your smile bright and healthy.
